Guest Lecture: Migration Studies - Where Next?

Bridget Anderson
Professor of Migration and Citizenship, Research Director of the Centre on Migration, Policy and Society, University of Oxford

Guest Lecture: Migration Studies – where next?
Tuesday 9 May 10-12 AM

Room D32, Handelshögskolan

(School of Business, Economics and Law, Vasagatan 1)

Prof Anderson’s talk considers how scholars should respond to the growing hostility towards migrants. It argues that we need to consider the basic category of the ‘migrant’. ‘Migration’ signifies problematic mobility and in public discourse, and in scholarship, is often raced and classed. Concern about migration has become a placeholder for concerns about the erosion of the privilege of the Global North, and democratic accountability. A new politics of migration must make connections between migrants and citizens, but also between migration and other global processes, particularly outsourcing and the exploitation of labour and resources in the global south.
